Theater Dates You Won't Want to Miss

If you have never seen a Broadway play or musical or attended a live-theater performance, you do not know what you are missing out on.

Thanks to the popularity of musicals, not to mention the success of the current movie version of Les Miserables, it is now hip to see a legitimate presentation. They may not be the staid or stodgy plays your parents saw, either. Today’s presentations have many of the bells, whistles and visual effects not present in plays of years past.

A lot of people are already familiar with The Wizard of Oz through repeated showings on television, but Wicked is a musical that some people may not be familiar with until they have seen it on stage. Billed as the untold story of how the evil and good witches came to meet, Wicked has wowed audiences since its Broadway debut in 2003. Wicked has attracted audiences in Chicago, Los Angeles and other American cities and is now on its current national tour.

The Lion King was a smash success in 1994 as a Disney movie, and Elton John and Tim Rice capitalized on the movie’s roaring popularity with a musical three years later on Broadway. Over 15 years later, the musical has played to millions of people in the United States, Canada and worldwide. Those who are on the West Coast may want to pick up Lion King San Francisco tickets for its performance at the Orpheum Theatre. There are also versions of this musical playing on Broadway and in Texas, among others.

If you are in a mood for a hauntingly beautiful musical, Les Miserables is an excellent choice. It is popular once again thanks to the Anne Hathaway-Hugh Jackman headlined movie, and this is an example of where watching the movie could get you to a theater to see the real musical in action. The show has lasted 25 years on Broadway and is on tour nationally to celebrate.

Are you in the mood for a more risqué musical? The Book of Mormon, from the creators of the raucous Comedy Central show South Park, is on a traveling show now in addition to its performances in New York. It is not a musical for the conservative theater-goer, as it makes fun of religion and musicals, but those with a sense of humor may love the send-up.

If you go to a show in another city, don’t just go for the show. Make it part of the experience. If you head to Chicago to see Book of Mormon, eat the deep-dish pizza. Take in a Cubs game. Visit an art museum. Find a restaurant that has pre- or post-theater menus. You can find restaurants with regular-sized meals open for the show-goers, and their staffs are trained to get you out on time to the show.

Scheduling the trip will also give you time to find airfare and hotel specials. Check with the website for the show you are seeing. There may be hotel discounts you did not know about. It is all about the planning.

If you have never taken in a show, then make it something on your to-do list. It is a fun way to spend an evening and, in tandem with other activities, can be a great way to spend a weekend traveling solo or with a significant other.
