In the Meantime

I am sitting on fire counting down the day to Friday, when I can bring my little man in for a follow up on his "buckle fracture wrist". I called at least 10 different orthopedic offices, and was told the same thing: "with fracture, we have to wait between 3 to 5 days before we can see him." Their reason was not a comfort for me to hear.

His left arm is wrapped, and I wanted a hard cast to put on to keep it from further damage! But that is not how it works! Agony, I tell you, agony! I wonder why they have to torture a mother's heart like this. For sure my son is less worry than I am as he told me: "I am a man, mom". Yes, a 14 years old man, indeed! Fearless, daring, and athlete!

His body is now marked with one broken right arm and now left wrist! This child of mine causes me worries but somewhat remains such a hero in my thoughts because he carries himself well through it all.

My questions are:

1) If you're in the medical field or if you know, tell me why nothing is being done for fracture straight away? Why the wait of 5 days?

2) Do you know that after the Holidays, many offices are overflown with fracture patients? (They told me so!)

  1. You poor mom. I had four sons and all of them have broken something while they were young. I don't remember much about it , just tha Iir doesn't much time to heal. And they alway s told me not to worry. Because when so young it will get better very quickly.

  4. Icy, I read your post at work on my cell and my heart went out to both of you. I had to wait till I got to talk to my husband to answer you though, as he is an x-ray tech and he said they have to wait if there is swelling which usually accompanies a break.

You have a brave little guy. He is much like his mom.

    Hugs to both of you!

  5. BTW, have you ever noticed that the er is overflowing during holidays? I used to hate when someone would need medical attention week ends or holidays especially if I just got off work myself. I worked at an urgent care facility for awhile, where I met my hubby.

  6. Huh. That's bad -- got to hurt, tons! I can't imagine why they can't see a person in that situation immediately. Sending hugs.

  7. Sorry, I noticed that the comment only went through half way.
You know, I think I have heard about the wait before, but sorry I don't know why either. Perhaps another reader will.
I did not know, but it makes sense. Lots of people are guilty of over playing during the holiday break. We went to the slow and sled with T and did a lot of things that could have caused broken bones. Yet, we held back and had a fantastic time!

  8. Only one of our kiddos has broken anything and that was our oldest DD. She wasn't even 3-years old when she tripped and fractured her elbow. They put her in a soft cast, too. After her little arm was set, she didn't seem to be too bothered by it, even when we took it off her to give her a bath. She was such a trooper. I'm not sure why it is they used the soft cast unless it has to doing with the type of fracture and the fact she was so young, but I think it all worked out fine in the end. I hope your son is healed up soon. It's never any fun seeing our kids not the picture of perfect. BTW, I would not be surprise by the increased fractures during the holiday months.
