Thursday Two Questions #46-Air Condition in Home

It is finally hot enough here in Metro Detroit for us to install our window air conditioner to take refuge. In fact, the heat wave was so bad that police officers had to stroll the neighborhood looking out for animals' well being.

For those that have no place to cool off, the nearby city even set up a so called Cooling Station. Imagine that! And this is the first time I've heard of this service even though I have lived here most of my life.

We have no central air, and I have no desire to invest in this expensive venture, so I'm very happy with my window units.  They kept us cool and comfortable. Moreover, I heard that window air units are also much cheaper than central air to run.

Questions then:

1) Which is more affordable to run: central air or window air units?

2) What are you currently using, or has the summer bill makes a big different on your energy usage?

  1. Icy, your photos are just so magnificent. I am in awe :)

    1. I think the air units are less expensive to run or at least that is what I hear from friends.

    2. I don't use anything here. We really don't have hot summers here or any seasons for that matter. Out in the suburbs however most people use air conditioning.

  2. We do not have central air nor window units at home, but I think the window unit would be less expensive. We have very mild summer and also very mild winter, and most houses here have no central air nor a/c. in the very few days we get those off shore hot winds, we just jump into the ocean. seriously, that is the time you will see a lot of people at the beach. further inland however, or out in the area closer to the desert, i believe most people have central air.

  4. Icy, if I was at work I could tell you the difference, but you are right. If I remember right central air is about three times higher in cost.

My hubby is dead set against air conditioning, even in his car, so we use fans. Fortunately for us our home is situated under several shade trees which make a big difference, but there were a few really hot days these past two weeks where I would have been grateful for one.

  5. We don't use air conditioning at all, but we don't live any where near an urban area where the heat collects like ants in a honey pot. But, as someone interested in energy I can tell you that central air is less expensive if you compare it to cooling a whole house with four or five window units, but that being said it is much cheaper to cool just one or two rooms with window units and let the rest of the house stay warm.

We use fans during the day to extract heat from the house, and turn them around at night to draw the cool breeze in.

    Interesting topic. Thanks.

  6. I think that depends on usage. We have central air (it came with the house) and use it sparringly. We have a small house (1 floor ranch) and we don't run it very cold. So we don't see much of a spike in our summer bills.

  7. I don't know. We don't have either.

It never gets that hot here. I was in London for a couple of days and was wearing a jumper and jeans one of the days.

  8. The summers in this area can get very hot so a/c is almost a necessity. When we first moved here we rented and used window air conditioning. The house we finally purchased can with central air and we love it.

Our house is very well insulated so once the house is cool the central unit just maintains the temperature. I can't remember the bills when we had the window units but the central air does not break our budget, it is very reasonable. It is far less than our winter heating bill.

  9. Wow, I have to say, the photo is so everything.

    1) You know I have mix feelings about this, since if you are in a house like mine, the unit would benefit us more. The boys are not always around.
    2) I have central air, but our house doesn't get that hot. It's a nice thing, then again, that is why it is so cold in the winters.

  10. beautiful♥ we had to get an airconditioner this year because of my ms...I wish we could just open the windows but it is too hot for my body to function properly.

  11. I have central air right now, but this year it isn't working as well as it should. I usually like it better than window air conditioners, but I want it to work right. I'm not sure which kind is cheaper.

  12. It is "beyond" hot here in Kansas. The year of 2011 will certainly be known as "the long, hot summer"!!! We have central air and I am sooooo thankful. Beautiful flower shot. Try to keep cool. Mickie :)

  13. What a beautiful photo!!

    1. I would think the window units would be less expensive.

    2. We use a/c but I keep it on 80 or 79 if it gets too hot. Just trying to keep our bills down.

    Aloha!

  14. Love this shot! We use fans, no central air. Summer here, Alberta, is too short to bother with air conditioning.
