Thursday Two Questions #40-Summer Programs
Today is the last day of school for JoJo, and we are officially on summer vacation. It means the kids get to sleep in late, eat breakfast late, and go to bed late. The whole routine will be slightly different, and the morning will be less stressful.
As soon as school is out, I usually take JoJo and Roco to the library to sign them up for the summer reading program. The prizes that they will receive, are small tokens of local businesses contributions, such as a coupon for sundae, a small fries, or a pack of two pencils and erasers.
However, I don't do it for prizes, but I do it to keep their mind fresh. Working in the school system as a volunteer and as a substitute for many years, I have witnessed how much the children forget after summer vacation. Thus, my questions for this week:
1) If you have small children, are they signed up for any program? If you don't have children, are you involved with your library in a reading program?
2) Have you checked out the many free programs and activities at your local library? We have science show, puppet show, make and take craft project, and petting zoo, etc...

1. Well I don't have children but I do visit the library and there are all sorts of events going on there for children and adults.
ReplyDeleteBTW another gorgeous photo.
1) way back when i was in the philippines, babysitting my nieces and nephew during summer, the purpose is for them to continually study in a fun way :) so we did Math through grocery shopping and window shopping, I gave them problems, and we did reading and writing through reading about bible passages and writing a reflection as to how it impacts and relates to their day. they enjoyed it. i have never volunteered in library, i am guilty of enjoying my summer vacation full time :)
ReplyDelete2. yes, aside from free programs from library, we check out free programs at state parks and nearby national monument here since we bring sometimes my hubby's niece who spends vacation in SoCal to those free programs, she loves finding tidepool creatures in the ocean and naming them.
My youngest daughter is home schooling her children all summer. She found that her teenager could test out on some of his classes and receive credits. She has made flash cards for the younger ones and has computer programs to help them.
ReplyDeleteThe library has excellent programs to keep our young busy. I have used some of them and was very happy.
School is out late there. Matt was out since June 3rd. Thanks for the reminder about programs.
ReplyDelete1) No, neither one of them are signed up for any programs. Our summer is so short it seems, and the kids don't really have much of a break. T is going to the library on a regular basis.
2) I am going to check on another library that we used to go to. Ours will be open only three days due to the city's budget cuts.
When my stepdaughter was young she would spend summers with us, she and I would spend a lot of time at the local library.
ReplyDeleteOur local library has a lot of programs for kids year round. I know they have guest come in for readings too. A petting zoo is a great idea.
Oh wow, congratulations on their official summer break! My girls are in Arizona, but had they been here, I would have enrolled them in a program or two especially those free ones @ the local library or @ Michael's free craft lessons every Saturday. The young people have so much energy to burn -hahaha! :) I do miss them a lot!
ReplyDeletei don't have children but i believe that kids should continue to study during school breaks. here in the philippines, this is where the well-to-do" kids do better in school because they have continuous learning activities during summer break, while the kids from poor families usually don't.
ReplyDeletei used to volunteer to city library but stopped when i moved almost 2 years ago.
Well, mine are all grown up, though we used the library. I did the home school route..it is what it was (lol). We enjoyed reading. Both of them are having a birthday within the next couple weeks, so I'm giving each of them a book this year (good thing for Amazon). Borders closed recently.. so other than the library and used- that was the last book store here. (I know) I think they have one on the other side of the island?
