Thurday Two Questions #14-The Effect of Holidays
A staggering numbers of adults are living with ADHD, but not knowing it. We tend to think that only children have ADD, and yes, the symptoms begin in childhood. Many children outgrown them, but more than 50% are not.
To find out if you have ADHD read this You, as an Adult Can Have ADHD too or if you want to understand why certain people in your circle behaving radically.
This is the time of year when things seemed to spin in circles with endless errands, and tons of things to do. Learning to live with ADHD, and managing it naturally, will bring more stability into your world.
My questions are:
1) How do you approach the holidays without overwhelming yourself?
2) What would you like to change and still keep the spirit of Christmas?

1) Only when I have guests, this year, I made sure I am taking it easy.
ReplyDelete2) Someone to do all the decorating and taking down the decorating for me.
Smiles.
As I grow older, I stress less about the holidays. We concentrate on the small children as far as gifts are concerned, and for the adults, we just make sure there's plenty of food and drink to keep us merry. All I would change (and this would actually increase the meaning of Christmas) is to bring out more of the spiritual in our homes, our country, and the world.
ReplyDeletehere are my answers:
ReplyDelete1) make a list and shopping budget, stick to the plan and stick to the list.:p
2) do away with elaborate food preparations and expensive decorations. simplicity is the key. getting the family together is the top priority.
One trick I've learned over the years is to shop all-year through for gifts. This does two things. First, it keeps me from drawing a blank as to what to get who, which will lead to panic and secondly, it allows me to spend a lot less because I can shop for bargins at my pace.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I believe trying to not throw too much into your already crammed schedule in the month of December will eliminate that cloud that can steal your enjoyment. This year, things have been more unsettled for me because of having too much on my plate and I hope next year to have a better handle on this so it won't be a repeat.

Learn to say NO a lot. I just don't allow myself to get into the artificial spirit of the season and keep the real meanings and traditions intact.
ReplyDeleteThis year instead of sending holiday cards by snail mail I will send by eMail, by personal calls and thru phone. I spent a lot in the past years and realized that not all mails were delivered! It is important to keep this fun and meaningful tradition alive too.
1) I try to get most of my shopping done by the end of November, so no rushing at the last minute.
ReplyDelete2) I love it just the way it is! :)
It's usually our little family and my kids are young and not into the latest this and NEED that as yet, so the holidays here are pretty laid back. We might cook or go out or just stay home and be with each other. Sometimes it's just like a regular day for us.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I'm used to in my country.
Here in America I watch people go nuts and just don't feel the need to get involved in all the stress.
I hope it will still be the same as our family grows.
2. We keep the spirit of Christmas because we don't get caught up in the unnecessary. However, I'd like to incorporate more traditions to do together as a family.
Aloha!
I love your photos Icy, especially the last one of the ornaments.
ReplyDeleteI now do most of my shopping online and have the packages mailed directly to the recipient. That cuts down on a lot of the stress. We also keep our Christmas celebration very simple.
I would like to see less commercialization of the holiday. I know that will never happen on a large scale but it's pleasant to think about.
Just returned to post a comment BC. Anyway, your article about ADHD is very helpful and very alarming.
ReplyDeleteAbout your questions:
1. I am sooo tired, nope we can't prevent overwhelming ourselves lol... 5 days to go!
2. I did answer this one unfortunately something happened to my pc, I was not able to post it... Now I forgot. Well, advance Merry Christmas BC. In case, I go on an early holiday... and the spirit of Christmas is always with me. Take care my friend and regards to your lovely family too :)
I truly believe I have a touch of ADHD as I am always getting distracted.
ReplyDeleteTriond goes and offers a 20% bonus in December (of all months!) for 10 articles published. I had wanted to make presents and create one for everyone but EVERYONE on my list is just too much. The fear of not getting done (can't leave anyone out) and cash shortage has made it impossible to give gifts this year so I am visiting everyone and making apologies. I did get to take Mom to the Christmas night lights.
