Thursday Two Questions #9-Moods Disorder

For many of us Michigan dwellers, this is the time of year when the changes in weather can bring on a gloomy mood.  Well, at least for me it is, since everything around me seemed to just die.  I find no enthusiasm when looking outside, and physically feel drained.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is also known as Winter Depression, and it is mainly caused by the lack of sunlight. My personal preference is to go to the Conservatory as often as I can to soak in the beautiful colors, and see different flowers.

Here are my questions:

1) Do you know that you can help your moods with the right foods?

2) What is the best ways for you to beat depression, naturally?

If it was up to me, I would live in another State with sunlight and warm weather for the most part of the year. Meanwhile, I sat on that bench at the Conservatory when I was there...dreaming!

  1. Hi Icy! I know what you mean about not seeing sunlight and colours. But I also love the winter and snow...it's a chance to see another magical change of season :) Don't worry...we'll have spring and summer back soon! :)

  2. Yes, Icy, there are herbs and foods to boost moods. I wrote about some of them.

When I feel down there are several different things that help me; prayer, poetry, talking to a friend, writing, the Bible, crafts, a good book, nature...

  4. We do not have winter here, but its sad during the rainy days. Chocolates can lift up my gloom and talking to friends. Sometimes we watch movies. I guess that's it :)

  5. i don't have a real winter experience as we have no winters. but i was in NYC in late winter and it totally ruined my vacation. i wanted to stay in bed all day.:p our rainy season makes me blue--i need sunshine.

chocolates lift my mood, also ice cream and coffee.

a shower makes me feel better when i get the blues. or a massage..anything that pampers.:p

  6. Love the pictures of the "Mums". Talk about a mood enhancer. To answer your first question, yes. Winter time means home-made soups at our house--nutritional and spiritual mood enhancers. To cure depression naturally, I go for walks, start a new project (even cleaning out closets does the trick), or read a book.

  7. 1. I do know that eating healthy helps in creating a different mood.

    2. For me when I am depressed, all I need to do is listen to music or get out to the gardens and I become completely transformed.

    BTW, LOVE that photo

  9. No I didn't, but that is wonderful to know. I will have to come back to your articles later.
Eat, is that natural? Exercise is another, but I get lazy with that.

  10. Your picture was really beautiful.

I have read that there are foods taht can help with depression. If I eat some chocolate, it does make me feel better temporarily. I do have to switch to dark chocolate though because it's healthier. LOL!

I like to listen to upbeat music. That seems to lift my mood. If I feel like singing along with the song, then I know that I am feeling better.

  11. I live in Florida where it is bright and sunny all year round. I am still growing tomatoes and watering bright colored annuals that live 10 months out of the year.

However, I deeply miss the changing seasons every winter.

The grass is greener in Florida, but when it is greener in Michigan it is enjoyed with more enthusiasm.

  12. After living in Alaska with the really short winter days I understand a little about the moods it can cause. Foods do make a difference.

I have found that keeping busy helps me get through the long winter days.

Sorry I am so late on this post, both my computer and internet connection have been acting up a lot lately.
