Musing With a Purpose-Gray Hair

Gray hair starts to grow like weed on my head, and the worst part of it is, it itches! I'm not joking, really! I beg my children to pluck them. I bribe my kids to pull them. Then wherever I can do on my own, I am happy to yank them out.

When I was younger, my aunt used to ask me to pull out her white hair, and she complained that they itched. I didn't believe her, until now! I'm not sure if the itches only happen to a certain people, but I inherited this gene. Most of the time I'm fine, and then it attacks as if I've step into an ant hole where millions ants are eating me alive.

I scratch until my skin bleed, and if my daughter was home, she pulls them out and relieves my itch. I go as far as shampoo my head when gray hair attacks, but nothing works out as great as pulling those suckers out.

My daughter warns me that the sides of my temples are getting bald, but that still doesn't ring a bell when I was under fire! Impulsive disorder, I might have! I don't mind getting old or getting gray hair. Ghosh...I might even look distinguish and smart with gray hair; I just don't like the itch!

So what should I do:
  • Shall I fight it or ignore it?
  • When it itches, should I just take a pill and chill?
  • Leave them, or pluck them?
  • If you have gray hair, do you have the itch problem and what do you suggest?
  • Would coloring my hair do the trick?

  1. Oh Icy Sweetie...
I have had grey hair since I was 33, and believe me I did not pull them out, but I colored my hair. I don't itch anymore either. Go figure. Mind over matter? Don't know, I just know I colored the hair and the itch went away. I have been coloring it now for 20 years. What a relief. Mine was that ugly dark battleship grey. My oldest son just turned 34 and he has quite a bit of grey too. I keep telling him, but he doesn't listen.

Well this is how it has worked for me. I hope it helps you sweetie.

Many hugs and much love, Sherry

  2. welcome to the club Icy. I was fighting with gray hair for awhile. I kept plucking it. Then I noticed that every time I plucked one stand, it grew back and double in number. So I lost the battle. I stopped and just accept the fact that I am growing old. hahaha

  3. Hahaha you crack me up. :) Seriously though, I've not ever heard of anyone struggling with itches from grey hair. Hmmm. If pulling them out works, then keep at it!

    Hugs!! :)

  5. They say greying or white hair really itches. Well, if you can't tolerate the itch, it won't be bad to pluck one :) I have greying hair too. Its a good thing there are dyes.

  7. I've had gray hair for a long time, but my baby girl started crying when they came in. She had a friend whose mother died of a heart attack and some how equated gray hair with old age and impending death so I have colored ever since to ease baby girl's fears. Maybe it stops the itch?? I don't itch, so could not tell you.

    Good luck with the itching.

  8. All of my grays are dyed blond and they don't itch. Maybe the dye prevents it? I wouldn't pull them out, that can't be good for your scalp.

  9. I'm sorry that your hair is itching like that. I have never heard of that. You might be able to dye your hair to ease the itching. Hopefully it will help ease the itching in your hair.
